stardust shines GRAINSTAR.
star of my dreams, 38 MOONS.
i wanna be TOM.
let's go... let's go... BRIGHTCLAN LEADER.
the world has been dyed black,
but our breath is still showing white
ever since the day we promised
to smash up the present
I'm sure we can still make it in time

star of my dreams, 38 MOONS.
i wanna be TOM.
let's go... let's go... BRIGHTCLAN LEADER.
let's go!!
i! wanna!
i wanna be!

I think you've spotted him. It's not that hard, really - with a pelt as bright as the sun and his large form, the BrightClanner must be pretty easy to find, even at night. But, just in case, I'll tell you what he looks like. Just to be sure, okay?
Grainpelt was always the biggest of his litter, even of Mousewind, who's a few moons older than him. His head is well-sized and bony, but still looks good on this tomcat. It's almost a square, actually, with bulky skull and strong jaw. His ears aren't all that different from other cats, tipped with a small tuft of golden fur. His eyes are an odd shade of baby blue, the color of kitten eyes when they first open. Like his bulky build, no one can be quite sure from who he got his eyes, but they are quite pretty against his yellow-gold pelt. Basically, it's the exact opposite of his sister, Pecankit's eyes: mainly light blue with flecks of darker, sapphire blue.
Each of Grainpelt's paws are massive in size. The tom first noticed this, actually, when he was patting his younger brother on the head. It was almost as big as the nearly-apprenticed kitten! Each toe holds a claw as sharp as diamonds - those are the hardest minerals on earth, you know - and the same color, too. Any enemies to threaten his Clan or family will definately feel those claws and their ripping power.
Next we should move up slightly, as I haven't told you about his limbs yet. His short fur gives everyone a good view at the muscle this tom has been able to build up, only adding to his powerful, stocky legs. They hold him up well and make him a swift, powerful - but loud - runner. His leaping power is great but st the same time it's cumbersome for him to hunt with such powerful steps.
Lastly, his pelt. The color of a lion, his fur's golden hue gives him a majestic look. Golden hairs cover the length of his body, broken through by bracken-colored stripes. He cleans it well in his spare time, so it seems to glisten when the sun hits it. It isn't soft, actually quite coarse. He has three major scars from the battle against the Tribe - a former SerenityClanner called Windstripe gave them to him. One runs across the length of his shoulders. Another was recieved when the ghostly tom raked his claws across Grainpelt's flank. The last one is just by his back leg.
the world has been dyed black,
but our breath is still showing white
ever since the day we promised
to smash up the present
I'm sure we can still make it in time
To properly explain Grainpelt, we'll have to go back a few moons. Well, more than a few: right back to when he took his first steps out of the nursery, on shaky but determined paws. He was flanked by Pecankit, whom at that point had not dissapeared, Hazelkit, Ryekit, his much-loved brother, and Mousekit, the newest edition to the family. At that time, Grainpelt was the most energetic and hyper - in other words, the least likely to pay attention. He was pretty much like any other happy-go-lucky kitten, but there was one thing that defined him even at a young age: he was loyal. No one could doubt that he would feircely defend his family and Clan, at any cost.
Perhaps, about 17 moons later, the loyalty is the only thing about him that hasn't changed. There have been two main events that have scarred the BrightClanner severely - and I don't mean like the three cuts Windstripe gave him. I mean emotionally. It changed him, molded him like clay into the cat he is now. To this day, he is quiet, thoughtful and thinks before he acts. One-hundred times more responsible than he was in his early moons, cats who know him would say he's matured a lot. He looks before he leaps. He thinks before he speaks. Courage shows through in every battle he fights in, and it is evident that he puts his Clan before anything.
I wanna be
counted together
with pallid hopelessness
running through
with a scream
before everything changes
counted together
with pallid hopelessness
running through
with a scream
before everything changes
When Azteckit, the young she-cat Runespell once had a crush on, left, it took him a while to erase - or at least leave behind - the memory of his former friend. That is, until he met Leapordpaw. She was kind and caring and was sure to make a great mother and warrior. He and her grew into warriors - Runespell and Leapordflight, they were called - together, and it wasn't long until young, valiant Runespell admitted his love for Leapordflight. Later on down the road, Leapordflight discovered she was having kits.[/blockquote]
When the litter was born, the couple was delighted to have four healthy kittens: two toms and two she-cats. One, with her dark, elegant blue eyes, was named Pecankit. Hazelkit was named for her light green irises. Ryekit had a striking dark pelt and Grainkit was the biggest of the bunch. Later, when a loner kit came to camp, Leapordflight took her in as the only nursing queen at the time. The youngsters were so small, Mousekit, as she was later named, grew up as close to the blood-siblings as if she was one.
They were a rowdy bunch, those kittens. The litter had a reputation around camp as being quite noisy, but still ridiculously cute. When a loner named Aurora came to camp with a badger cub called Hollow and an apprenticed-aged tom - Sage, later named Sagepaw, the kits couldn't be more intregued. Ryekit and Grainkit spent most of their time bouncing about Sage and Hollow. When Sage was killed, it was extremely hard on young Grainkit - but he continued on with his happy ways. A few days after Aurora left was when Pecankit vanished without a trace. No blood, nothing. Everyone expected she was dead. Grainkit mourned his sister, but Hazelkit and Mousekit had been closer to her than her brothers.
His mentor was Runespell, his own father. Grainpaw was overjoyed. His own father! His own father was his mentor! It was enough to make him want to jump around, despite the fact that Pecankit was missing. Apprenticeship was fun and exciting, at least for the most of it. First, Ryepaw got sick. The medicine cats did all they could, but the tom was unreachable. He was unconcious or sleeping for most of his apprenticeship and beyond. For Grainpaw, it was like being slapped in the face. All his dreams of sharing grandeur with his brother, exchanging stories about training... All gone.
About halfway through his training, Leapordflight gave birth again: this time, to a litter of just two. They were called Mistykit and Flaxkit, and they were Grainpaw's little siblings.
Now, this set off a few sparks within the family. The older daughtors were angry. Grainpaw was worried and frustrated. When he saw the new kits for the first time, he had to run from the nursery to hide his tears. What if Runespell liked the new kits better? What if he didn't want Grainpaw as an apprentice anymore? All childish questions, but they haunted Grainpaw all the same. Lucky for him, Cinnabarcloud - an elderly BrightClanner - followed him with his lumbering steps and spoke with Grainpaw. Thanks to Cinnabarcloud, Grainpaw realized that his father would love him just as he always had - and that he should be happy for the new kits, not angry.
That changed everything, and from that moment on Grainpaw was close to Cinnabarcloud. He idolized the old tom. But, with all the visits to the nursery and training, he was ignorant to two things:
Ryepaw's condition was worsening.
Cinnabarcloud was growing older.
Both of these things came crashing down on him in warriorship. Right after being named, Grainpelt, Hazelfrost and Mousewind rushed to be congradulated by the ones dearest to them. And for Grainpelt, one of those cats was Cinnabarcloud. But within a few heartbeats, everything went wrong: Cinnabarcloud said he was happy he got to see Grainpelt become a warrior.
Then he died.
It was so sudden that Grainpelt could barely get over it. Uneasyness followed within the moons after that when Ryepaw, who had been sick for longer than anyone had anticipated, finally passed away. This did it: Grainpelt couldn't bear any of this sadness. For a long time after, the world seemed like a dark place, a sad place.
He perked up a little when Cinnabarcloud visited him in a dream, explaining that he would look after Flaxkit as a guardian - because while Grainpelt's paws were set firmly on the path, Flaxkit's were not. Grainpelt understood this, and was happy that Cinnabarcloud had visited him one last time. After this, Grainpelt met Frostedpaw: Ghostlystar's daughter, a lively cat who reminded him of who he used to be. Once she was named Frostedwing, they admitted their love for eachother. Soon four kits came along, three gorgeous daughters and one strapping son. The names came eisely: Noblekit for the tom; because that's exactly what they hoped for him to be; Charmkit and Briarkit for two of the girls; because one had a bright golden pelt that was sure to charm the toms as she grew older and one looked like she had just stepped out of a patch of prickles. The last one was named Cinnabarkit, after Cinnabarcloud himself.
There wasn't much time to celebrate, though: soon Grainpelt's friend Lastfalling disappeared from the Clan. He was sad and missed his friend dearly, but Ghostlystar soon named him the new deputy. Grainpelt then realized that one day, he might become Grainstar.
And that day came much sooner than they ever expected. Not long after the kits became apprentices -- Grainpelt mentoring Noblepaw like his father had him -- a horrible secret was let out. It started off innocently, involving only a strange tom in CloudClan by the name of Kitewhistle, the CloudClan medicine cat, Dragonflydance, and... Ghostlystar.
It happened like this: Ghostlystar and Dragonflydance were caught by two patrols - on CloudClan, one BrightClan - meeting secretly at the border. Briarpaw was in the BrightClan one. Of course, things got out of hand quickly. The BrightClan cats suspected Dragonflydance of seduction; the CloudClanners thought the same thing of Ghostlystar. A fight broke out. Ghostlystar snapped, his calm composure breaking, and he became what was later known as 'primal Ghostlywind'. He slashed at any cats that came by, not knowing or caring if they were CloudClan or BrightClan. He died there and then, with Dragonflydance, his secret lover who had born a kit, Kitewhistly, by him, by his side. Briarpaw was also killed in the battle.
Later that night, Grainstar set out to speak with StarClan. There, he got nine lives from nine cats that meant so much to him - among them were Briarpaw, Cinnabarcloud, and Ghostlystar, who apologized and explained. Still hurt but willing to forgive Ghostlystar and remember him as the strong leader who had saved BrightClan from a flood of short-lived leaderships, Grainstar set out to fill the place that had been asked of him.
